Congress Reiterates Demand for High Court-Monitored Judicial Probe into Tripura DGP Anurag’s Death

Agartala, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Congress on Sunday renewed its demand for a judicial inquiry, monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court, into the death of former Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, describing the circumstances surrounding the senior IPS officer’s death as “highly suspicious.”

Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and MLA Sudip Roy Barman said the party was not satisfied with the ongoing police investigation and urged the state government to order a High Court-monitored judicial probe to establish the facts behind the incident.

Anurag, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on July 20.

Addressing a press conference along with Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Ashish Kumar Saha and senior party leader Prasanta Sen Chowdhury, Roy Barman questioned the government’s reluctance to order a judicial inquiry.

“If the government has nothing to hide, it should have no hesitation in ordering a judicial inquiry under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge,” he said, alleging that the administration was avoiding such a probe to suppress the actual circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

Roy Barman also urged the Tripura High Court to take suo motu cognisance of the case, asserting that the death of the state’s senior-most police officer was not merely a political issue but one of national concern. He claimed the circumstances pointed towards a possible case of murder and said the truth should emerge through an independent judicial investigation.

On July 24, Tripura Police constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team headed by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak to investigate the case.

The demand for a judicial probe has also been echoed by the CPI(M), CPI and several other opposition parties. Both the Left parties and the Congress have separately organised protest marches in the state seeking a High Court-monitored investigation.

Anurag had assumed charge as Tripura’s Director General of Police on May 17, 2025, after serving as Director General of Police (Intelligence). During his distinguished career, he held key assignments in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. He also headed the Special Investigation Team constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The senior IPS officer was cremated with full state honours at his ancestral town of Baraut in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on July 22. His tenure as Tripura DGP was scheduled to continue until May 17, 2027.
