Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam dedicated his Commonwealth Games 2026 silver medal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the nation after delivering a record-breaking performance in the men’s 60kg event in Glasgow on Sunday.
Rishikanta secured India’s first medal of Day 4, finishing second with a combined lift of 264kg. Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq claimed the gold with a Games record total of 273kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya won bronze with 260kg.
Speaking after the event, the Manipur lifter said the achievement belonged to the entire country rather than to him alone. He expressed gratitude to the Government of India, the Indian Weightlifting Federation, the support staff and everyone who contributed to his journey, saying their encouragement played a crucial role in his success.
Rishikanta made a strong start in the snatch competition, successfully lifting 116kg and 119kg before clearing 121kg on his final attempt to set a new Commonwealth Games record in the discipline.
In the clean and jerk, he opened with a successful 143kg lift but failed to complete his 148kg attempt. In a bold bid for gold, he opted for 151kg in his final attempt, successfully cleaning the weight but falling short in the jerk, leaving his overall total at 264kg.
The Indian lifter also paid tribute to his coach, Vijay Sharma, crediting him for his guidance and preparation. He said his training had given him complete confidence going into the competition and acknowledged the support extended to Indian athletes under the current sports ecosystem.
Despite narrowly missing the gold medal, Rishikanta’s silver and Games-record snatch performance marked a memorable achievement for India at the Glasgow Games.
