Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister Sengottaiyan on Monday reiterated the state government’s opposition to Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, asserting that no construction activity would be allowed to proceed without protecting Tamil Nadu’s interests over Cauvery water sharing.
Speaking to reporters at Coimbatore Airport, Sengottaiyan said the Tamil Nadu government would continue to oppose the project. “Not even a single brick will be laid for the Mekedatu dam. Chief Minister Vijay will not allow it,” he said.
The minister said Chief Minister Joseph Vijay was committed to safeguarding the state’s rights while focusing on development initiatives across Tamil Nadu.
Sengottaiyan also discussed several other issues, including the state government’s opposition to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), proposed metro rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai, the disqualification proceedings involving AIADMK MLAs, and the upcoming state Budget.
On urban infrastructure, he said the Chief Minister was keen on expanding metro rail connectivity in Coimbatore and Madurai to meet growing transportation needs. He added that the state government had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the Centre’s approval and support for the projects.
Regarding the disqualification proceedings against four AIADMK MLAs, Sengottaiyan said a representation had been submitted to the Speaker requesting a direct inquiry in the presence of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. He expressed confidence that the Speaker would take an appropriate decision after examining the matter.
On NEET, the minister said opposition to the medical entrance examination reflected the sentiments of people in Tamil Nadu. He said the state government would continue pursuing constitutional and legal measures to seek exemption for students from the examination.
Sengottaiyan declined to share details of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Budget, saying its contents would remain confidential until it is formally presented in the Assembly.
