Former Member of Parliament and former Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, S. Tarlochan Singh, will be honoured with the inaugural Dr. Ratan Singh Jaggi Memorial Award at a ceremony to be held at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, Chandigarh, on July 27.
The award is being instituted by the Punjab Arts Council in collaboration with the Padma Shri Dr. Ratan Singh Jaggi Memorial Foundation. It carries a cash prize of ₹51,000, along with a shawl and a commemorative memento.
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker S. Kultar Singh Sandhwan will preside over the function as the chief guest, which will also mark the inauguration of the Dr. Ratan Singh Jaggi Open Air Theatre at Punjab Kala Bhawan.
S. Tarlochan Singh is being recognised for his long-standing contributions to minority welfare, religious affairs, social service and cultural preservation. Over a distinguished public career, he has served in several important administrative and public positions, including roles in the Punjab Government’s Information and Public Relations and Tourism and Cultural Affairs Departments.
His public service journey also included responsibilities in the Office of the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Office of the President of India. As Vice-Chairman and later Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, he worked on issues related to minority rights, communal harmony and constitutional values.
Tarlochan Singh also served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, where he raised several public issues and advocated concerns related to Sikhs, Punjabis, the Punjabi language, heritage and social justice.
Apart from his political and administrative contributions, he played an active role in promoting sports. He served as Vice President of the Indian Olympic Association and was associated with Indian contingents at the Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
The Government of India honoured S. Tarlochan Singh with the Padma Bhushan in 2021 for his distinguished service and contributions.
