An oil tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after reportedly striking a naval mine, according to local media reports on Sunday, amid heightened tensions in the strategically important waterway.
Preliminary reports cited by Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency said the vessel had allegedly moved away from the maritime route designated by Iranian authorities and entered an area outside the approved safe navigation corridor despite earlier warnings.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is among the world’s most critical energy transit routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments from Gulf producers.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia following recent military exchanges between the United States and Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran and Oman have continued discussions on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei described the recent talks between the two countries as “useful and forward-looking”, saying progress had been made.
Baqaei said technical consultations were held in Tehran on Friday and Saturday between deputy foreign ministers of both nations. The discussions focused on common principles and practical mechanisms for maintaining safe maritime traffic while respecting the sovereign rights of Iran and Oman as coastal states.
He added that Oman’s delegation had left Iran on Saturday, but technical and political consultations between the two sides would continue.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said there had been no change in the status of maritime navigation through the waterway.
Separately, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said its naval blockade against Iran remained in effect. CENTCOM stated that US forces had redirected multiple commercial vessels, boarded ships for verification and disabled vessels that allegedly attempted to violate the blockade.
