The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has taken note of the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl inside a moving sleeper bus in Greater Noida and called for a fast-track trial and strict punishment for the accused.
DCW Chairperson Lata Gupta condemned the incident and said the Commission had sought an action-taken report from the police.
“The gang rape of a girl on a bus is a heinous crime. The police have arrested the bus driver and conductor. The Commission has sought an action-taken report from the police. The Commission will advocate for a fast-track trial to ensure the harshest punishment for the accused,” Gupta told IANS.
She said such incidents reflected a serious erosion of moral values and stressed the need for timely justice under laws including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
“I feel that moral values are eroding. While everyone talks about rights, we seem to be forgetting our fundamental duties. Such incidents in society are deeply condemnable and unacceptable. The government has streamlined legal procedures and implemented provisions under laws like POCSO to ensure fast-track trials, strict punishment, and timely justice for offenders,” she said.
According to police, the incident took place near Pari Chowk on August 4. The teenager, a resident of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, had left home without informing her family after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling to Noida Sector 63, where her cousin lives.
Police said the girl mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk amid heavy rain and darkness. While looking for another vehicle, she stopped a sleeper bus. The conductor allegedly told her that it was headed towards Noida Sector 63, following which she boarded it.
The bus, however, was reportedly returning empty after repairs at a workshop in Surajpur. There were no passengers inside, police said.
The survivor alleged that after the bus started moving, the conductor behaved inappropriately towards her, following which he and the driver sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she resisted.
The accused, identified as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep, allegedly abandoned her near Ring Road in Delhi’s Kashmere Gate area before fleeing. Both were arrested from a parking area in Timarpur the same day.
Police have seized the bus and sent it for forensic examination. Investigators have collected CCTV footage from the route to establish the sequence of events and track the vehicle’s movements. Forensic teams have also recovered strands of the girl’s hair from inside the bus.
The accused have been booked on charges relating to gang rape, kidnapping and assault. Police said curtains covering the individual berths inside the sleeper bus may have provided privacy during the alleged crime.
The investigation is underway.
