A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside an empty sleeper bus by its driver and conductor in Greater Noida earlier this month before being abandoned near Delhi’s Kashmere Gate, police said on Monday. Both accused have been arrested.
According to police, the incident occurred near Pari Chowk on August 4. In her complaint, the teenager alleged that driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep sexually assaulted her after the bus began moving and threatened to kill her if she resisted.
The two accused were arrested from a parking area in Timarpur on the same day, police said. The bus has been seized and sent for forensic examination. Investigators have also collected CCTV footage from the route to establish the vehicle’s movements and reconstruct the sequence of events.
The teenager, a resident of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, had left home without informing her family after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling to Noida Sector 63, where her cousin lives.
Police said she mistakenly got down at Pari Chowk amid heavy rain and darkness. After realising that she was at the wrong location, she looked for another vehicle and eventually stopped the sleeper bus.
There were reportedly no passengers on the bus. The conductor allegedly told her that it was heading towards Noida Sector 63, prompting her to board. Police said the bus was actually returning empty after undergoing repairs at a workshop in Surajpur.
The girl alleged that the conductor began behaving inappropriately soon after the bus started moving, following which both men allegedly assaulted her.
The accused later abandoned her near Ring Road in Delhi’s Kashmere Gate area and fled, police said. She subsequently approached the police, leading to the registration of a case.
Kuldeep and Sandeep have been booked under provisions relating to gang rape, kidnapping and assault.
Police said curtains covering individual berths inside the sleeper bus may have provided privacy during the alleged crime. Investigators have also recovered strands of the girl’s hair from inside the vehicle as part of the forensic examination.
Further investigation is underway.
