Iran’s Army on Monday claimed that it launched drone strikes against locations housing US helicopters and personnel at the Al Minhad airbase in the UAE, describing the action as retaliation for a US attack on Iran’s Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the Iranian Army said it launched “dozens of attack drones” at the base from early Monday in response to what it called recent US aggression and the deaths of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel and Iranian civilians on Larak Island.
The Army described Al Minhad as an important facility used to support and transport foreign forces. It also said it remained prepared to protect Iran’s security until the perceived threat from its adversaries was removed from the region.
The claim followed an earlier announcement by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that it had carried out retaliatory attacks against US military positions elsewhere in the region.
The UAE Ministry of Defence, meanwhile, said its Air Force had responded to an unmanned aerial vehicle detected over the country’s territorial waters and approaching from Iran.
The ministry said UAE Armed Forces remained on high alert and that its air defence systems were continuously monitoring and protecting the country’s airspace. It also urged the public to rely on official sources and avoid spreading rumours or inaccurate information.
Earlier Monday, the IRGC claimed responsibility for a missile-and-drone operation targeting US military positions at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases in Jordan. According to the IRGC, the strikes targeted technical and maintenance infrastructure as well as fighter-jet facilities.
The developments followed US strikes on two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday. US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins said IRGC forces had been observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. He said the US military was closely monitoring the area and remained prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through the strategic waterway.
The IRGC said several military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded in what it described as a “US-Israeli” attack on Larak Island in Hormozgan province.
Larak is a small Iranian island off Bandar Abbas, east of Qeshm Island and south of Hormuz Island.
