Man held for hacking social media account, threatening Assam CM

Guwahati, August 31, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Assam Police have arrested a man from Nagaon district in Kerala for allegedly hacking another person’s social media account and using it to post a threat to assassinate Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in exchange for Rs 2 crore, officials said on Monday.

The accused, identified as Rashidul Haque, a resident of Dhing Chapori under Juria police station in Nagaon, was arrested in Kerala following an investigation into the alleged threatening post.

According to police, Haque allegedly gained unauthorised access to the social media account of Mobarak Ali, a resident of Gadaimari in Juria, and used it to publish a message threatening to kill Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The post allegedly offered Rs 2 crore for the assassination of the Chief Minister.

The threatening message prompted police to investigate the account and trace the person allegedly responsible for the post. Investigators subsequently tracked the suspect to Kerala, where he was apprehended.

During questioning, Haque reportedly told police that he allegedly hacked Ali’s account as an act of revenge stemming from a personal dispute between the two men.

According to the statement attributed to the accused, Ali had allegedly developed a relationship with his wife and later eloped with her. Haque also claimed that his wife left behind their differently-abled child and allegedly took Rs 5 lakh with her.

Police are now verifying these allegations and investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged hacking of Ali’s social media account and publication of the threatening message.

Investigators are examining the digital trail associated with the account, including its social media activity and electronic evidence, to determine how it was accessed and whether anyone else was involved.

The authorities are also probing the alleged personal dispute between the accused and the account holder and are working to establish the sequence of events that led to the threatening post.

Further investigation is underway to determine the applicable legal provisions in the case.
