Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has urged people of Indian origin living abroad to be honest and contributing citizens of their adopted countries while sharing India’s message of unity, service and coexistence.
Addressing more than 2,000 Hindus and members of the community in the Greater Toronto Area, Bhagwat said Indians settled in different countries had responsibilities both towards their respective societies and humanity as a whole.
“Those who have any relation with Bharat, they may be today settled all over the world, citizens of different countries. Because they are from Bharat, they are to be honest, contributing citizens of that country,” he said.
At the same time, he called on the diaspora to share a worldview in which individuals, society and the environment could progress together without harming one another.
The address was delivered at a gathering themed “Embracing the world in friendship”. Bhagwat said India’s civilisational outlook recognised diversity while maintaining that humanity was fundamentally united.
“We have been trained to see the unity underlying the diversity,” he said, adding, “Diversity is natural. Unity is the reality.”
Bhagwat also said India had historically shared knowledge and civilisational values without seeking territorial conquest or conversion. He cited mathematics, astrology and Ayurveda among the areas in which Indian knowledge had spread.
“Whenever Bharat became big, it never became a superpower. It became a glorious country,” he said, adding that India became “Vishua Guru, not Mahashakhti” through its character.
Referring to conflicts, environmental concerns and the consequences of scientific advancement, Bhagwat said the world needed an alternative approach. “There has to be a third way, and this new third way is ancient very old way of Hindustan,” he said.
He also maintained that Hindu identity could not be confined to a particular language, form of worship or lifestyle, saying, “Hindus respect all, Hindus accept all.”
Calling for communities abroad to lead by example, Bhagwat said Indians should build societies that demonstrate responsible living and service. “Mere successful life is not sufficient,” he said, stressing the importance of love for humanity.
He urged those attending to make incremental changes in their lives to become more enlightened and service-oriented.
The RSS was founded in Nagpur in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Bhagwat has served as its Sarsanghchalak since 2009. His Toronto programme followed engagements in North America, including a public event in New York.
