Congress MP and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor on Monday condoled the death of senior IPS officer Shefeen Ahamed K, who died at the age of 50 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Ahamed, who was serving as Inspector General of Police, CID-Crime Branch, Odisha, died at a private hospital in Hyderabad while undergoing treatment, according to local media reports.
Tharoor, Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram, recalled his association with Ahamed during the officer’s deputation to Kerala, when he served as Rural Superintendent of Police in Thiruvananthapuram.
“I came to know Shefeen during his deputation to Kerala, when he served as Rural SP of Thiruvananthapuram. He was a thoughtful, unfailingly courteous officer with a fine mind, who wore his competence lightly,” Tharoor said in a post on X.
The Congress leader described Ahamed as an accomplished officer who handled his responsibilities with humility and professionalism. He also recalled the officer’s continued connection with Thiruvananthapuram after returning to his home cadre in Odisha.
“Though he returned to his home cadre in Odisha, he never quite left Thiruvananthapuram behind, and stayed in touch over the years. That he should be taken from us so young, and in the city he loved, makes this loss all the harder to bear,” Tharoor said.
Ahamed was a graduate of the College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET) and a native of Thiruvananthapuram. He joined the Indian Police Service in 2003 and went on to serve in several key policing assignments in Odisha during a career spanning more than two decades.
He made significant contributions to cybercrime investigation and Crime Branch operations, according to the account of his career.
Tharoor expressed condolences to Ahamed’s family, colleagues in the Odisha Police and others who knew and respected him.
The Odisha Police also mourned the officer’s death, describing him as a distinguished member of the 2003 IPS batch who served with dedication, integrity and professionalism.
The state police highlighted his contribution to policing, particularly in cybercrime investigation, and said his professional legacy would be remembered with respect.
