Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in Bishkek and interacted with members of the Indian community who had gathered to welcome him during his two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan.
Modi paid homage at the statue of Gandhi, which he himself unveiled during his visit to Kyrgyzstan in 2015.
“In Bishkek this morning, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in the city. Gandhi Ji’s thoughts will always have an unparalleled impact on our minds,” Modi said in a post on X.
The Prime Minister also met members of different communities in Bishkek and later interacted with Indian community members gathered outside the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial.
The Indian diaspora had earlier accorded Modi a warm welcome on his arrival in Bishkek, chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”. Modi described the reception as a “very special welcome” from the Indian community.
He also witnessed cultural performances by people from Kyrgyzstan and praised the artistes. Yoga enthusiasts performed yoga as part of the welcome programme.
Modi arrived in Bishkek on Sunday for a two-day visit during which he is scheduled to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games.
After his arrival, Modi expressed gratitude to Kyrgyzstan Cabinet of Ministers Chairman Adylbek Kasymaliev for the welcome and said he would hold bilateral meetings with various leaders besides attending the SCO Summit.
In his departure statement before embarking on his two-nation visit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, Modi said India had been an active and constructive member of the SCO since 2017.
He said India would seek to advance its regional vision centred on “Security, Connectivity and Opportunity” and work with SCO members towards a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism.
Modi is also scheduled to meet Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov and other SCO leaders and attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, which he described as a celebration of Central Asia’s rich living heritage.
The Prime Minister said he expected the visit to strengthen India’s strategic partnerships in Central Asia, deepen its civilisational ties with the region and promote shared efforts towards peace, stability and prosperity.
