CISF personnel at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport detected UAE currency worth approximately Rs 22.08 lakh from a passenger bound for Dubai, officials said on Monday.
The passenger was identified on August 30 by personnel of the CISF Check-in Investigation Wing (CIW) through behavioural detection and profiling. He was travelling to Dubai on FlyDubai flight FZ-442.
During a subsequent check, CISF personnel found 85,000 UAE dirhams concealed inside the passenger’s hand baggage. The currency was valued at approximately Rs 22.08 lakh.
Following the recovery, the passenger, along with the foreign currency and baggage, was handed over to Customs officials for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The CISF said the detection highlighted the vigilance and alertness of its personnel in preventing the unauthorised movement of valuables through the airport.
The latest recovery comes days after CISF personnel detected unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 68.53 lakh from two passengers at IGI Airport on August 20.
In that case, personnel deployed at Random X-BIS, ASG Delhi, noticed suspicious behaviour and subsequently analysed CCTV footage. One passenger was selected for detailed screening, while the footage helped identify another passenger travelling with him.
Both were travelling to Guwahati and then onward to Agartala. Detailed screening of their baggage led to the recovery of Rs 68,53,500 in cash. The passengers, along with the cash, baggage and relevant travel documents, were handed over to Income Tax officials for further action.
In another case on July 17, CISF personnel at Terminal 1 intercepted a passenger bound for Kolkata after noticing suspicious behaviour during security screening. A detailed frisking resulted in the recovery of 1.210 kg of gold concealed in the passenger’s clothing, besides Rs 1,97,200 in unaccounted cash.
The passenger reportedly failed to produce valid documents or provide a satisfactory explanation for the recovered items. During the proceedings, he allegedly attempted to influence the on-duty CISF personnel to avoid legal action, but the personnel rejected the offer and informed senior authorities.
