Three people were killed and five others injured after a massive explosion at a firecracker factory near Manauri Bazar on the Kaushambi-Prayagraj border on Monday, officials said.
The incident occurred after a fire broke out at the factory, triggering a series of powerful explosions that caused panic in the surrounding area. Several nearby houses were damaged in the blast, while debris was scattered over a wide area.
District Magistrate Vipin Pal reached the spot and reviewed the rescue and relief operations. He directed officials to intensify the search for people who may have been trapped under the debris and ensure immediate medical assistance for the injured.
“Information about the explosion at the firecracker factory on the Prayagraj-Kaushambi border was received at around 10.40 a.m. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway to find those trapped under the debris and provide medical care,” Pal said.
He said teams were conducting a continuous search operation because of the possibility of people being trapped beneath the debris. Those rescued were being taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
According to officials, a fire brigade team, six to eight ambulances, and police and administrative personnel were deployed at the site.
Pal said the injured were shifted to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj.
“So far, approximately three people have been reported dead, while approximately five are injured. The injured have been sent to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj, where they are receiving treatment,” he said.
He cautioned that the casualty figures were preliminary and could change after the rescue operation was completed.
Senior police and administrative officials from both Kaushambi and Prayagraj districts reached the site following the incident.
Preliminary information suggested that the firecracker factory was operating from a house located some distance from the settlement. Several people were reportedly inside when the fire broke out.
Eyewitnesses said smoke was initially seen emerging from the house, followed by a sudden burst of explosions as firecrackers began detonating one after another. The explosions were heard across the surrounding area and initially made it difficult for rescue teams to approach the site.
The force of the blasts shattered window panes of nearby houses and damaged several structures, while a thick cloud of smoke engulfed the area.
Police restricted movement around the site amid the continuing explosions to facilitate rescue operations and maintain safety.
