A retired Army soldier was killed in Jammu after his throat was severely cut by a banned Chinese kite string while he was riding a two-wheeler, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place late Sunday evening on the Ring Road in the Bishnah area.
The victim was identified as retired Naib Subedar Lakhvinder Singh. According to officials, he suffered critical injuries after coming into contact with the kite string while travelling on his two-wheeler.
Singh was returning to his home in the R.S. Pura area after completing his work as a private security guard at an industrial unit in Bari Brahmana.
He was rushed to a hospital following the incident but succumbed to his injuries.
The use and sale of Chinese kite string, commonly known as ‘Manja’, is prohibited by authorities in Jammu and Kashmir. Several shopkeepers have been arrested in Jammu in recent times for allegedly selling the banned material clandestinely.
The latest fatality has renewed concerns over enforcement of the ban, with residents demanding stringent action against those involved in the sale and use of the prohibited string.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and launched an investigation to identify those responsible and take legal action against them.
Retired servicemen in Jammu district receive support through the Zila Sainik Welfare Office (ZSWO), Jammu, which deals with veteran welfare, documentation and re-employment.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has also approved the deployment of 4,000 ex-servicemen volunteers across the Union Territory for non-combatant static guard duties and protection of critical infrastructure, including power stations and bridges, in coordination with local police and the District Sainik Welfare Board.
Job fairs, including those periodically organised at Satwari Cantonment by the Tiger Division and the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR), along with veteran rallies, are held to connect former military personnel with second-career opportunities and address pension and medical-related grievances.
