AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat over his recent remarks on Hindu-Muslim unity, alleging that the RSS has never believed in democracy and instead advocates a system centred on one leader and one ideology.
Owaisi was responding to Bhagwat’s remarks at the ‘One World, One Humanity’ faith leaders’ conference in New York, where the RSS chief said a Hindu who believes Muslims should have no place in India ceases to be a Hindu. Bhagwat had also said Hindutva recognises the dignity of every human being and accepts different paths to the same truth.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Owaisi questioned Bhagwat over the identity of those who claim Muslims should not live in India.
“Let them clarify this: who are the people saying that Muslims should not live in India? Whoever makes such nonsense statements either has links with the RSS or is inspired by RSS ideology. So, let them identify those people,” Owaisi said.
He alleged that the RSS has historically adopted different narratives for its supporters and the wider public. According to Owaisi, statements made by its ideological leadership and writings associated with the organisation should be examined to understand its position on pluralism and Hindu-Muslim unity.
Owaisi also alleged that the US State Department’s religious freedom office was exerting pressure on the RSS, claiming that Bhagwat’s remarks were intended to create a favourable international image.
Referring to writings on RSS founder K.B. Hedgewar, Owaisi alleged that Hedgewar had opposed Hindu-Muslim unity. He also cited the RSS’s stated emphasis on “one flag, one leader, and one ideology” to question its commitment to democratic and pluralistic values.
“The RSS has never believed in democracy; instead, it advocates a dictatorship,” Owaisi said, while challenging the organisation to place the complete statements and writings of figures including V.D. Savarkar, M.S. Golwalkar, Hedgewar, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and Rajju Bhaiya before the public.
Owaisi also questioned Bhagwat’s reference to fraternity, citing the BJP’s alleged lack of Muslim representation, Uniform Civil Code laws, mob lynchings and calls for violence against Muslims and Christians. He further criticised the use of bulldozers to demolish homes, describing such actions as contrary to the idea of fraternity.
On the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Owaisi said it was too early to predict the AIMIM’s electoral prospects. He said party preparations were underway and that he would return to Uttar Pradesh after September 20 for meetings and public gatherings.
