BJP to contest all 117 Punjab Assembly seats on its own: Satish Poonia

Chandigarh, August 31, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national General Secretary Satish Poonia on Monday ruled out an alliance for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, saying the party will contest all 117 seats on its own strength.

Poonia, who was recently appointed the BJP’s organisational in-charge for Punjab, said strengthening the party’s grassroots organisation would be his primary responsibility ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.

Addressing his first media interaction after taking charge, Poonia said he would focus initially on understanding the organisation, reviewing its functioning and strengthening its structure from the booth level to the state level.

He said meetings with the BJP core committee, state office-bearers, district presidents and district in-charges would be part of his initial programme.

Poonia also announced that the BJP’s Seva Sankalp Abhiyan would be organised across the country, including Punjab, from September 17 to October 17. He said the campaign would focus on social service and public welfare rather than merely marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.

Emphasising the importance of the party cadre, Poonia said workers would remain at the centre of organisational activities.

“There are limited organisational positions and limited tickets for elections, but the party has always made efforts to give due respect and responsibility to its workers. The organisation certainly recognises those who remain continuously connected with the party and work with commitment,” he said.

He also appealed to party workers to maintain discipline and express their views within the framework of organisational values. According to Poonia, discipline, commitment and collective effort would be crucial to achieving the BJP’s Mission Punjab 2027 objective.

On the possibility of an alliance, Poonia said the central leadership’s position was clear.

“I am the ambassador of the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its clear message is that we will contest all 117 seats on our own strength. A meeting does not mean an alliance. In a democracy, people and political leaders can meet the Prime Minister to discuss various issues. It should not be interpreted as an indication of any political understanding,” he said.

Poonia said he would hold detailed organisational meetings in Jalandhar in the coming days with state office-bearers, district presidents and district in-charges. He would also interact with party leaders and workers to assess the organisation’s strengths, challenges and priorities.

He said the BJP would undertake a systematic review of its organisational structure, strengthen its grassroots presence and prepare a comprehensive roadmap for the 2027 Assembly elections.
