Amritsar Soormas captain Abhishek Sharma has vowed that his team will continue playing an aggressive and entertaining brand of cricket despite beginning their 2026 Sher-E-Punjab T20 League campaign with a five-wicket defeat to Mohali Kings.
The Soormas produced a spectacular batting performance in Mohali on Sunday, posting 258/5 after Abhishek smashed a blistering 77 off just 26 deliveries. However, Mohali Kings completed a remarkable chase of the massive target with three balls to spare.
Despite the defeat, Abhishek said the performance reflected the attacking intent he wants from his batting unit throughout the tournament.
“I said to the boys and the coaches, I think this was the start I wanted. Not as a captain, but as a batting unit. Because if you see, 260, on any ground, any pitch, it’s always a par score,” Abhishek said in a statement on Monday.
Head coach Sandeep Sawal agreed that the team had fallen short of the total it could have achieved, while stressing that the tactical mistakes would be addressed ahead of the next match.
“In the first innings, we had at least 25 runs short. We couldn’t finish the way we should have, but it was still a good target. We made a few mistakes which we will cover in the next match and discuss,” Sawal said.
Abhishek said the opening defeat would not prompt the Soormas to abandon their attacking approach.
“Very much same. In Punjabi, it’s said, keep it tight. And we’re gonna keep it tight,” he said.
The captain also urged fans in Amritsar to continue supporting the side and promised more entertainment in the matches ahead.
“All the Ambarsaras, keep it tight. Those who are Surma’s fans. We’ll keep getting this kind of entertainment. We’ll convert the loss into a win next time. So, support us. This team will entertain you,” Abhishek said.
With their aggressive batting approach already on display, the Soormas will now look to tighten their execution and convert high-scoring performances into victories as the tournament progresses.
