The death toll from devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 903, while 4,247 people, including 592 foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for, according to the latest figures released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Monday.
Southern Chitwan district has reported the highest number of recovered bodies, with 272 corpses found along riverbanks and other locations. Local authorities have faced difficulties in storing and managing the bodies amid the scale of the disaster.
Most of the recovered bodies in Chitwan were subsequently buried at Devghat, located at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Trishuli rivers, to prevent the remains from becoming a public health hazard.
Before the burial, authorities collected DNA samples to help identify the deceased at a later stage, the District Administration Office in Chitwan said.
The NDRRMA said unidentified bodies were also being kept at 21 hospitals across different districts and appealed to relatives searching for missing family members to check official records for identification.
Among those still unaccounted for are 933 people working at hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to reach people believed to be trapped inside tunnels at several hydropower facilities, with technical assistance from teams from India and China.
Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel, along with other government employees, are also among those reported missing since the disaster struck areas along the Nepal-China border.
The floods have left 267 people injured, of whom 156 have already been discharged from hospitals.
According to the NDRRMA, 10,451 people have been rescued so far, including 252 foreign nationals. The Nepal Army has carried out aerial rescue operations involving 3,344 Nepali citizens.
A total of 20,819 security personnel have been deployed for search, rescue and relief operations. The deployment includes 8,722 Nepal Army personnel, 7,894 Nepal Police personnel and 4,203 Armed Police Force personnel.
