Teenage Moodiness or Early Warning Sign? Punjab Urges Parents to Spot Drug Use Before Addiction Takes Hold

Chandigarh, August 31, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

As Punjab intensifies its campaign against drugs under the Bhagwant Mann government’s ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ initiative, the state is also focusing on early intervention to prevent occasional or experimental substance use among young people from developing into dependence or addiction.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh urged parents and caregivers to remain alert to behavioural changes in children and respond with care rather than stigma or confrontation.

“Every child can be saved from addiction with care, compassion and conversation. As families, caregivers, and society, we must keep our eyes, ears and hearts open,” he said, adding that concerning changes in someone close should be addressed with empathy.

Experts said early drug use may not always produce obvious signs. Persistent withdrawal, secrecy, sudden changes in friendship circles, loss of interest in hobbies, unexplained anger or emotional outbursts, school-related complaints and significant changes in sleeping patterns can warrant attention.

Other possible indicators include unexplained demands for money, missing cash at home, declining personal hygiene, reduced appetite or weight loss. Physical signs may include red or glazed eyes, unusual pupil size, drowsiness, agitation, tremors, slurred speech, poor coordination, repeated bruising and, in severe cases, injection marks.

However, experts stressed that no individual sign proves drug use. A consistent pattern of behavioural or physical changes is more significant.

Dr Ishaan Prakash, District Nodal Psychiatrist, Sangrur, said families should not wait for definitive proof before seeking professional guidance.

“One of the biggest mistakes families make is to play a waiting game before seeking help,” he said, adding that stigma and concerns about social judgment can delay intervention. “A caring parent is the first line of defence against addiction. Be their safe place, so drugs never become their escape.”

Parents who notice concerning changes are advised to begin with a calm conversation, use open-ended questions and listen without immediately judging or accusing the child. If substance use is suspected or disclosed, experts recommend avoiding shaming, threats, labelling and purely punitive responses.

Families seeking confidential guidance can contact the Tele-MANAS helpline at 1800-89-14416.
