Two villagers were killed and a woman remained missing after three people were swept away by the swollen Kuili hill river in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district, officials said on Monday.
The incident occurred in Bahda village under Chotanagra police station in the Saranda region amid incessant rainfall that caused the river’s water level to rise suddenly.
According to officials, the three villagers were returning home at around 6 p.m. on Sunday after attending a funeral in the village when a strong current caught them as the river rose abruptly.
Local residents immediately launched a search. Late on Sunday night, the body of a woman was found caught in bushes around 500 metres downstream from the spot. She was identified as the mother of villager Roya Sidhu.
A police team led by Chotanagra police station in-charge Gautam Kumar subsequently reached the site and joined the villagers in the search operation. On Monday morning, the body of another villager, Bosen Sidhu, was recovered from the river.
The third person, identified as Sunita Sidhu, wife of Bamiya Sidhu, is still missing. Search teams are checking the riverbanks, bushes and downstream areas where she may have been carried by the strong current.
Officials said continued rainfall and the river being in spate were hampering the search and rescue operation. Police teams are also examining downstream stretches along the likely course of the water.
The incident has left Roya Sidhu grieving the loss of both parents. The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over Bahda village.
