Six people were injured, including two who are in serious condition, after a shooting incident in the southeastern French city of Valence, French media reported on Wednesday.
The incident took place at around 10:30 pm local time (2030 GMT) on Tuesday, when an armed assailant opened fire on a group of people with an assault rifle before fleeing the spot in a vehicle, according to Franceinfo.
The victims, five males and one female aged between 15 and 22 years, were rushed to hospital. Two of them were reported to be in serious condition, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The suspect remains absconding. Authorities are yet to establish his identity or the motive behind the attack, while an investigation is underway.
A burnt vehicle believed to have been used by the attacker was later recovered several kilometres away from the scene.
The incident comes days after another violent attack in France. On July 27, three people were injured in a knife attack in Paris, following which a male suspect was arrested.
The attack took place in northwestern Paris, where a man carrying two kitchen knives allegedly attacked pedestrians. Two of the victims were reported to be in critical condition.
The suspect was detained at the scene by an off-duty police officer. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the accused had provided only a self-reported identity and was making incoherent statements.
Nunez urged caution while determining the motive behind what he described as an extremely violent act.
Several videos of the incident circulated on social media, with one showing the suspect making a religious statement while being restrained.
The Paris incident occurred a day after another violent attack in Germany, where one woman was killed and 29 others injured after a vehicle was driven into a crowd near Berlin’s Tiergarten park. The driver later attacked people with a weapon believed to be a machete.
The incident took place close to the venue of the city’s Christopher Street Day pride parade. Police later shot dead the suspect involved in the vehicle ramming and stabbing attack.
