Zaheer Khan Becomes Co-Owner of Lanka Premier League Franchise Jaffna Kings

Colombo, August 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Former India fast-bowling great Zaheer Khan has joined the ownership group of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchise Jaffna Kings after Stockholm-based global sports ownership group Anchor Sports AB completed the acquisition of the four-time champions.

Following the takeover, the franchise has been renamed Anchor Jaffna Kings, marking a new phase for the team under its new ownership structure. Zaheer will serve as co-owner alongside Anchor Sports founder Nagendra Siddoutam as the group expands its footprint in international franchise cricket.

The move brings another major cricketing personality into the LPL, with Zaheer’s vast experience as an international player expected to add significant value to the franchise.

Jaffna Kings have been the most successful team in LPL history, winning four titles in five completed seasons. The franchise remains among the leading contenders in the current edition, placed in the top two of the points table with four victories from six matches under captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

Expressing his excitement over the new role, Zaheer Khan said, “I’ve always admired the calibre, innovation and variety of bowling talent that comes out of Sri Lanka. It is a country I’ve visited, competed in and hold very fond memories of. To now be part of Sri Lankan cricket as an owner is something I’m genuinely thrilled about, and I can’t wait to get started with the Anchor Jaffna Kings.”

The acquisition further strengthens Anchor Sports’ global cricket portfolio, which includes the Antwerp Anchors in the European T20 Premier League and the Vancouver Anchors men’s and women’s teams competing in Canada’s Super 60 League.

Nagendra Siddoutam said the investment reflects the group’s vision of building internationally connected franchises with strong local identities.

“Sri Lanka has a rich cricketing heritage, and the LPL has established itself as a competitive league in a short span of time. The Jaffna Anchors will be a natural extension of what we’re building globally — franchises rooted in their local communities while being part of a connected international network,” he said.

LPL Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela welcomed Zaheer’s association with the franchise, saying his experience and mentorship would provide valuable guidance to young Sri Lankan cricketers.

The arrival of new ownership is expected to further boost the Lanka Premier League’s global profile by attracting renowned cricket figures and international sports investors.
