The Punjab Government has decided to provide free electricity to all Gau Shalas across the state, extending the benefit to 152 additional institutions and taking the total number of Gau Shalas receiving free power to 518.
The decision was approved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann during a meeting held in Chandigarh on Wednesday.
Announcing the move, the Chief Minister said 366 Gau Shalas were already receiving free electricity and the latest decision would bring the remaining 152 Gau Shalas under the scheme.
“All 518 Gau Shalas in Punjab will now receive free electricity from the state government. They will not have to pay any electricity charges,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister said Gau Shalas play a crucial role in addressing the problem of stray cattle by providing shelter and care for abandoned animals. He said strengthening these institutions is essential for better management of cattle and reducing the menace of stray animals on roads.
Mann appreciated the efforts of Gau Shala management committees, saying they are rendering a valuable service by caring for cattle that could otherwise pose risks to public safety.
He also stressed the need to modernise Gau Shalas to improve their functioning and ensure more effective management of stray cattle.
“The Punjab Government is committed to supporting Gau Shalas and will extend every possible assistance to strengthen these institutions,” the Chief Minister said.
Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, Secretary (Power) and Secretary (Animal Husbandry) were also present during the meeting.
