An armed man was arrested near US President Donald Trump’s Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, just hours before the President was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising event at the venue, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that the arrest followed a report from federal agents about a suspicious individual moving around the golf course. The incident occurred over the weekend, but details were made public on Tuesday (US time), shortly before Trump’s scheduled appearance at the fundraiser.
The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele of Downey, California. According to investigators, deputies found him carrying a concealed firearm along with prohibited ammunition. He was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition.
Authorities said Taele was seen taking photographs and recording videos on the golf club premises. Investigators believe he appeared to be observing security preparations being carried out ahead of the President’s visit.
The US Secret Service is leading the investigation to determine whether the suspect posed any threat to President Trump. According to CNN, investigators are examining whether the incident had any connection to a possible threat against the President. However, officials have indicated there is currently no evidence suggesting the suspect was actively planning an attack, while emphasising that the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials also revealed that Taele is separately under investigation by the El Segundo Police Department in connection with a robbery case. No further information about that investigation has been disclosed.
President Trump was travelling aboard Air Force One to California when the arrest was announced and remained scheduled to attend the Republican National Committee fundraising dinner at the golf club.
Authorities said federal, state and local agencies continue to coordinate extensive security arrangements for presidential visits, with any suspicious activity near such venues being treated with utmost seriousness. Investigators are continuing to examine the suspect’s actions, intentions and any potential security implications, while urging the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry is completed.
