Playback singer Sonu Nigam has opened up about his childhood struggles with anger and how he channelised that intensity into building a successful career in music.
The singer recently appeared on Game Changers: The Music Series, hosted by trade expert Komal Nahta, where he spoke about the passion, discipline and determination that have shaped his journey.
Recalling his ability to perform demanding live shows, Sonu spoke about a memorable experience at the Sydney Opera House, where he performed two separate three-hour concerts on the same day.
He said the energy required for such performances came from the “fire” within him, which included ambition, hard work, compassion and dedication.
Sonu added that the same intensity could have taken a negative direction if not controlled, revealing that he had a very short temper as a child but learned to use that energy constructively.
During the conversation, the singer also reflected on the sacrifices he made early in his career. He said his father often advised him to work hard first and enjoy the rewards later, a philosophy that influenced his decision to focus on music rather than a conventional college life.
Sonu recalled moving to Mumbai at the age of 18 after completing Class 12 to pursue his musical ambitions. He said the decision proved crucial as he began finding opportunities soon after and went on to become associated with the television music show Sa Re Ga Ma by the age of 21.
The singer said he was fortunate to enter the industry at a time when television was expanding and believes the timing played an important role in shaping his career.
