Dabur India Ltd on Tuesday said it stands by the purity and quality of its products after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directed the company to stop selling certain food products carrying “100 per cent” claims, terming such declarations ambiguous, unverifiable and potentially misleading.
In separate filings with the BSE and the NSE, the FMCG major maintained that the declarations on its product labels comply with the prevailing legal and regulatory framework and are in line with long-standing industry practices.
“Dabur India Limited believes that the declaration on our product labels comply with the prevailing legal and regulatory framework and are consistent with long-standing industry practices. Dabur stands by the purity and quality of its products and has never made any misleading claims,” the company said.
The clarification came after FSSAI prohibited the sale of identified Dabur products carrying claims such as “100 per cent Natural”, “100 per cent Pure”, “100 per cent Purity Guaranteed”, “100 per cent Organic” and “100 per cent Tender Coconut Water”.
According to the food regulator, such claims are ambiguous, cannot be independently verified and are likely to mislead consumers.
FSSAI also observed that Dabur Himalayan Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Dabur Organic Honey were displaying the Jaivik Bharat logo without a valid FSSAI organic endorsement, allegedly violating the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017.
Additionally, the regulator objected to Dabur Hommade Coconut Milk carrying the claim “100 per cent Purity”, stating that such a claim is not permitted for compound food products.
The regulator has directed the company to immediately stop the sale of the identified products and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days.
Responding to the order, Dabur said it continues to maintain the highest standards of quality, food safety and regulatory compliance in the manufacture and sale of its products. The company added that the impact of the order is limited to the products identified by the regulator and said it is seeking legal advice on the future course of action.
Shares of Dabur India closed 4.32 per cent lower at ₹407.40 on Tuesday.
