Punjab Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat on Wednesday reviewed the progress of various schemes related to beekeeping, sericulture and mushroom cultivation, stressing the need to promote allied agricultural activities to increase farmers’ income.
Chairing a meeting with senior officials of the Horticulture Department in Chandigarh, Bhagat said the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is working towards strengthening horticulture and encouraging crop diversification across the state.
Horticulture Secretary Arshdeep Singh Thind and Additional Secretary, Horticulture, Latif Ahmed were present during the meeting.
During the review, the Minister assessed the implementation and progress of schemes related to beekeeping, sericulture and mushroom cultivation. He said diversification of agriculture has become essential for sustainable growth in farmers’ earnings and that allied activities can provide additional income opportunities while making the horticulture sector more profitable.
Bhagat highlighted that beekeeping, sericulture and mushroom cultivation have significant potential to support farmers by reducing dependence on traditional crops and creating new avenues for economic growth.
The Cabinet Minister also directed officials to accelerate the recruitment process in the department, stating that adequate manpower would help improve administrative efficiency and ensure better implementation of farmer-oriented schemes.
Reviewing other departmental matters, Bhagat instructed officials to ensure timely completion of all initiatives aimed at benefiting farmers and strengthening the horticulture sector in Punjab.
