Punjab Power Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Wednesday said that the state government has undertaken power distribution modernisation works worth nearly ₹5,000 crore under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to strengthen the electricity network and improve supply reliability across Punjab.
Sond said the projects are aimed at upgrading the distribution infrastructure and ensuring quality and uninterrupted power supply to consumers. He added that farmers have been receiving more than eight hours of continuous electricity supply daily since May.
Highlighting the progress under the scheme, the Power Minister said 1,296 new 11 KV feeders have been installed to improve network reliability and reduce pressure on existing infrastructure. He added that 1,12,195 new distribution transformers have also been installed to meet increasing electricity demand in both rural and urban areas.
He further said that the transmission system has been strengthened through augmentation and upgradation of 663 circuit kilometres of 66 KV lines, along with the construction of 355 circuit kilometres of new 66 KV transmission lines.
Replying to a call attention motion raised by MLA Balkar Singh Sidhu regarding power infrastructure in the Bathinda region, Sond said the 66 KV Phul and Bhai Rupa substations are currently being supplied through a 66 KV line originating from the 220 KV Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant, Lehra Mohabbat substation.
To reduce congestion on the existing transmission network and improve reliability, a new dedicated 66 KV transmission line from the 220 KV Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant, Lehra Mohabbat to the 66 KV Phul substation is being constructed.
The Minister said the new transmission line has a total length of 13.2 circuit kilometres, of which 11.08 circuit kilometres have already been completed. The remaining work includes replacement of eight transmission towers and increasing the height of four towers crossing 220 KV transmission lines to maintain required safety clearances.
Sond said that as an interim measure, PSPCL has redistributed the load among the 66 KV Bhai Rupa, Mehraj and Phul substations, enabling uninterrupted power supply of more than eight hours daily to farmers since May.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening Punjab’s power sector, the Minister said the ongoing infrastructure projects would improve efficiency, reliability and quality of electricity supply while catering to the growing needs of agriculture, industry, commercial establishments and domestic consumers.
