In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, the Amritsar Rural Police have arrested two alleged members of a trans-border narcotics supply network and recovered 10.03 kg of heroin from their possession.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the operation was carried out as part of the Punjab Government’s ongoing campaign to eradicate drug trafficking in the state.
The arrested accused have been identified as Jasbir Singh alias Monu and Amritpal Singh alias Motta, both residents of Rangarh village in Amritsar district. Police also impounded the motorcycle allegedly being used by the duo for transporting narcotics.
DGP Yadav said investigations are underway to trace both the backward and forward linkages of the smuggling network with the aim of identifying other members involved and dismantling the entire supply chain.
Sharing details of the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said police received specific intelligence that two operatives of a cross-border narcotics network had retrieved a large consignment of heroin and were heading towards the Gharinda area to deliver it.
Acting on the information, police teams set up a checkpoint in the area and intercepted the suspects while they were travelling on a motorcycle. During the search, officers recovered 10.03 kg of heroin from their possession.
SSP Chahal said further investigation is in progress and more arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days as the network is probed.
A case has been registered under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Gharinda in Amritsar Rural.
