Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday apologised over concerns related to the spread of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deepfake content and other operational issues on the company’s platforms, according to government sources.
The sources said Zuckerberg acknowledged concerns raised by the Indian government regarding objectionable and manipulated content circulating on Meta platforms and expressed regret over what were described as shortcomings in the company’s operations.
“Mark Zuckerberg sent his apologies for the CSAM content, deepfake content and errors in operating the platform,” government sources said.
The government also conveyed to Meta that the company’s role in selecting and distributing content to users could affect its eligibility for intermediary protections under Indian law.
According to sources, authorities informed the company that the “safe harbour” protection available under the Information Technology Act may not apply if a platform is found to be actively deciding what content is delivered to users.
“It was made clear to them that they are not covered under Intermediary definition. They select who receives the content. Safe harbour under IT Act not applicable. They admitted that a lot of money was paid for boosting certain type of content. They apologised and regretted the mistake,” the sources said.
Earlier in the day, government sources said social media platforms, including Meta, were required to comply with Indian laws after a parliamentary panel sought an “unqualified apology” from Zuckerberg over the brief removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post.
The sources said Meta could risk losing safe harbour protection in India if it failed to meet the stipulated requirements.
A senior Meta delegation met Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan in New Delhi to discuss the erroneous removal of the Prime Minister’s video. The delegation was also scheduled to meet Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
