Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday questioned the withdrawal of a report by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on E20 blended petrol, alleging that the automobile industry body was pressured into retracting its findings after highlighting concerns over the fuel’s impact on vehicles.
Kejriwal claimed that the SIAM report had pointed towards issues related to higher chloride content and moisture levels in E20 petrol, which could potentially damage vehicle components. He asked the Central Government to explain why the report was withdrawn after being submitted.
In a video message posted on social media platform X, Kejriwal said that SIAM had conducted research involving automobile manufacturers and submitted its report to the government on July 28. He alleged that the report was withdrawn on August 4 following pressure from the Centre.
“This SIAM report on E20 is shocking. SIAM conducted research, and all automobile manufacturers collectively found that E20 is damaging vehicles because of its high chloride and moisture content,” Kejriwal said.
He further alleged that after withdrawing the report, SIAM stated that some issues may have existed in the document and that certain findings required re-examination.
Kejriwal questioned the government’s decision to promote E20 petrol across the country despite what he described as concerns raised by scientists and automobile engineers.
“When science and engineering raise questions about E20, why is the Modi government forcing it on the entire country?” he asked.
