Violence broke out across several university campuses in Bangladesh after clashes between rival student organisations left dozens injured, prompting campus administrations and police authorities to initiate inquiries and deploy additional security personnel.
The clashes involved activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student organisation linked to Jamaat-e-Islami. The incidents were reported from campuses including Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Government Madrasah-e-Alia in Dhaka.
The unrest comes amid rising tensions between competing student groups over ideological differences, campus influence and organisational control. According to local media reports, universities that played a major role during the 2024 student protests have again become centres of political confrontation.
A clash between Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir members at Dhaka College on Tuesday left several people injured. Sheikh Zahidul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told local media that the confrontation took place inside the college campus.
“Several people have been injured. Police are not stationed inside the campus. We responded after receiving information about the incident,” he said.
Police sources said tensions at Dhaka College intensified following an earlier confrontation at Jagannath University, where Chhatra Dal members allegedly clashed with activists of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union and Chhatra Shakti over entry to a seminar organised to mark the second anniversary of the July 2024 demonstrations.
The violence later spread to the National Medical College Hospital, where injured students were brought for treatment. Doctors said more than 70 people had received medical attention by Tuesday evening. Those injured included members of different student organisations as well as journalists.
The first major clash was reported on Monday evening at Begum Rokeya University during an exhibition commemorating the July 2024 protests. University officials said the dispute began after Chhatra Dal members objected to a banner titled “Judicial Killing”, which displayed photographs of six Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP leaders convicted of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
The disagreement escalated into prolonged clashes lasting several hours, with reports of members from both groups using locally made weapons, hockey sticks, iron rods, bamboo poles and helmets.
Following the incidents, the administrations of Begum Rokeya University and Jagannath University announced separate inquiry committees. Police have also been deployed at several campuses in Dhaka and other areas to prevent further escalation.
