Seven years after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, a report has highlighted changes in the Valley’s everyday life, pointing to developments in infrastructure, governance, education, connectivity, tourism and law and order.
The report, based on an opinion article by political analyst Israar Shahid published in Global Kashmir, states that one of the most visible changes since August 5, 2019, has been the return of a more regular rhythm of life in several parts of the region.
It recalls that for decades, Kashmir’s public image was often associated with violence, curfews, shutdowns, protests and uncertainty. For many people who grew up during the 1990s and early 2000s, daily life was frequently affected by disruptions, with schools, markets and public activities facing repeated interruptions.
The report states that before 2019, ordinary residents often found themselves caught between competing political forces, with the impact of unrest being felt most by common citizens, including students, traders, farmers, labourers and small business owners.
It also refers to the migration of Kashmiri Pandits during the 1990s, noting that the departure of many experienced teachers and academics affected the educational environment in the Valley. Prolonged disruptions to academic activities, according to the report, affected opportunities for an entire generation of students.
Highlighting post-2019 developments, the report points to improvements in road infrastructure, digital governance, public services and connectivity. It cites projects such as the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover in Srinagar and other road projects in areas including Sanat Nagar, Nowgam, Sangrama and Delina as examples of infrastructure expansion.
The report also mentions the arrival of grid-connected electricity in Gurez in November 2023, describing it as a significant improvement for residents of remote areas.
According to the article, technology-based governance has expanded through digital services, online certification systems, grievance portals and Direct Benefit Transfer mechanisms, enabling citizens to access government services through more structured processes.
The completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, along with engineering projects such as the Chenab Bridge and Anji Khad Bridge, has been highlighted as a major milestone in improving connectivity and economic opportunities.
Tourism has also witnessed revival, with destinations such as Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg continuing to attract visitors, while areas like Gurez gaining popularity. The report states that increased tourist activity has benefited taxi operators, guides, artisans, restaurant owners and other local businesses.
It further notes the return of film production activities in Kashmir, describing renewed interest from filmmakers as a reflection of improved conditions.
The report states that changes in law and order have allowed educational institutions to function with greater continuity, enabling students to focus on academics, competitive examinations and career opportunities.
At the same time, it acknowledges continuing challenges, including unemployment, political aspirations and constitutional debates, stressing that long-term peace requires economic growth, opportunities and inclusive development.
The article concludes that the transformation of Kashmir is ultimately reflected in the experiences of ordinary people who measure change through daily life — uninterrupted education, improved connectivity, business continuity and greater confidence in planning the future.
It adds that while debates over Article 370 continue, many residents increasingly associate the past seven years with a transition towards stability, development and the opportunity to live with greater normalcy.
