Punjab Finance and Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday held a series of high-level meetings with transport associations and employee unions, assuring them that the Bhagwant Mann-led government would address their legitimate demands in a time-bound manner.
Cheema first met representatives of the Punjab State Goods Transport Association and the Small Scale Bus Operators’ Association to discuss issues affecting the transport sector.
Describing transport as the backbone of Punjab’s economy, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving the genuine concerns of transport operators. “The Punjab Government remains fully committed to supporting the transport sector, and all legitimate demands of both associations will be resolved in a time-bound manner,” he said.
To expedite the process, Cheema directed Transport Secretary Varun Roojam and State Transport Commissioner Parneet Shergill to examine the memorandums submitted by the associations, prepare actionable proposals, and convene follow-up technical meetings at the earliest to finalise solutions.
Later, in his capacity as Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Employee Affairs, Cheema held separate meetings with representatives of the GPWSC Water Supply Pump Operator Association Punjab, NHM Employees Union, Outsource Sehat Vibhag Mulazam Union, and Punjab Pardesh Paledar Mazdoor Union.
The employee organisations raised various service-related and welfare issues before the minister.
Responding to their concerns, Cheema said the state government was considering their demands with “utmost empathy and seriousness” and that necessary steps were being actively evaluated to provide timely relief to employees and workers.
Representatives of the participating transport associations and employee unions submitted detailed memorandums highlighting their demands during the meetings.
