Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday stepped up his attack on the Samajwadi Party, accusing its previous government of financial irregularities and mismanagement while highlighting his administration’s initiatives in healthcare, women’s mobility, infrastructure and law and order.
Addressing a rally in Deoria, Yogi said the SP leadership had become active after the state government launched a free bus travel scheme for women on August 26. Taking a dig at SP president Akhilesh Yadav, he said the party’s “Babua” had suddenly “woken up” and called a press conference.
The Chief Minister focused particularly on the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) in Lucknow, alleging that its original estimated cost was Rs 200 crore but the previous SP government spent Rs 864 crore, while the project remained incomplete.
Yogi further alleged that the previous government planned to spend another Rs 900 crore to Rs 1,000 crore from the state exchequer and subsequently hand over the facility to a private company. He claimed the proposed centre would include a hotel, gym, club and other facilities, with the revenue allegedly benefiting members of the Yadav family and their associates.
Calling it an attempt to create a private enterprise with public money, Yogi demanded that the SP leadership apologise to the people of Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister also highlighted his government’s efforts to tackle encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh. He claimed that more than 50,000 people had died from the disease over four decades and accused successive Congress and SP governments of failing to adequately address the crisis.
Yogi said the state had moved from a situation he described as “one district, one mafia” to “one district, one medical college”, citing medical colleges in Deoria and Kushinagar as examples. He also claimed that his government had dismantled the mafia network and strengthened law and order.
“The mafia has been crushed, wiped out completely,” Yogi said, adding that those threatening women and traders would face either jail or “hell”.
On law and order, he claimed festivals were now being celebrated peacefully across Uttar Pradesh, with no riots or major clashes.
He also highlighted the recently launched free bus travel facility for women aged above 60, under which eligible women can travel free in Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses along with one accompanying passenger.
Discussing infrastructure, Yogi said all development works proposed for Deoria had been approved. He urged MLAs to identify bridges and other infrastructure requirements and submit proposals promptly.
The Chief Minister also asserted that Uttar Pradesh had shed its earlier “Bimaru” image and said people were increasingly proud of the state’s development and changing reputation.
