The death toll in the terrorist attack on migrant labourers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district has risen to two after the second injured worker from Chhattisgarh succumbed to his injuries at a Srinagar hospital on Saturday.
Officials identified the deceased as 24-year-old Deepak Rattray, son of Uma Shankar, and 28-year-old Bopinder, son of Dasrar. Both were residents of Chhattisgarh and were employed at a brick kiln in Kellam village of Kulgam district.
According to officials, Bopinder was initially admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag after the attack but was later shifted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, in Srinagar due to the severity of his injuries. He died during treatment on Saturday morning.
The attack took place on Friday evening when terrorists allegedly opened fire at close range on the two non-local labourers before fleeing the scene in a hit-and-run assault. Deepak Rattray had succumbed to his bullet injuries shortly after being admitted to the hospital in Anantnag.
Following the incident, security forces launched a massive search operation after cordoning off the area to trace those responsible for the attack.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the incident, describing it as a cowardly act of terror. He said he had spoken with Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other senior security officials and directed security agencies to intensify operations to track down and eliminate the attackers.
The Lieutenant Governor also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured that the Union Territory administration stands firmly with them.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political and religious leaders across Jammu and Kashmir. It comes amid intensified counter-terror operations in the Valley following recent incidents of militant violence, including the killing of Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi during Amarnath Yatra duty in Anantnag on July 22.
