India’s impressive campaign in judo at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued on Friday as Yamini Maurya secured the silver medal in the women’s 57kg category after a spirited performance against England’s Acelya Toprak in the final.
Yamini pushed the pre-tournament favourite all the way in a fiercely contested bout that extended into the golden score period. However, after accumulating three shido penalties, the Indian judoka conceded the contest by ippon, handing Toprak the gold medal after an exhausting battle lasting six minutes and 54 seconds.
Following the victory, Toprak acknowledged the intensity of the contest, saying she felt completely drained after the marathon encounter.
South Africa’s Donne Breytenbach and England’s Lele Nairne shared the bronze medals in the women’s 57kg event.
Despite missing out on gold, Yamini’s silver added to India’s remarkable success in judo, which has emerged as one of the country’s strongest disciplines at the Glasgow Games.
Earlier in the competition, Harsh Singh captured India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s 60kg category with a commanding 10-0 victory over Australia’s Joshua Katz in the final. Asmita Dey also scripted history by winning the women’s 48kg title after defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach in a closely fought gold medal bout.
With three Indian judokas reaching their respective finals and two returning with gold medals, the Glasgow campaign marks a significant leap for Indian judo compared to the Birmingham 2022 Games, where Tulika Maan’s silver medal was the country’s best result in the discipline.
India’s strong showing on the judo mat also boosted its overall standing in the Commonwealth Games medal table. The country climbed to ninth place with a tally of 20 medals, comprising five gold, 11 silver and four bronze medals.
