Madhya Pradesh Orders Probe After Kidney Patient Dies During Ambulance Transfer Amid Oxygen Supply Allegations

Mandla, August 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Madhya Pradesh administration has ordered an inquiry into the death of a 21-year-old kidney patient during an ambulance transfer in Mandla district after his family alleged that the vehicle’s oxygen cylinder ran empty en route to the hospital.

Ajit Baraiya, a resident of Sunhara Mal village, died on July 27 while being shifted from Bamhani Hospital to the district hospital. According to family members, he was suffering from severe breathing distress and required continuous oxygen support during the journey.

The family alleged that despite informing the 108 ambulance service about Ajit’s critical condition, oxygen support was initiated only after the ambulance began its journey. They further claimed that the oxygen cylinder was exhausted within a few kilometres, leaving the patient gasping for breath before he succumbed.

A video that surfaced after the incident reportedly showed the ambulance’s oxygen pressure gauge indicating zero pressure, raising questions about the preparedness of the emergency medical service.

Following the incident, Mandla Collector Rahul Namdev Dhote constituted a four-member inquiry committee comprising medical and revenue officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, the Collector said the committee would examine both the medical treatment provided to the patient and the functioning of the ambulance service. The probe will also assess whether prescribed operational protocols for emergency vehicles were followed during the transfer.

Dhote said the inquiry report has been sought at the earliest and assured that strict legal action would be taken if negligence or any violation of established procedures is found against any individual or agency.

Ajit’s father maintained that his son’s life could have been saved had uninterrupted oxygen support been available throughout the journey, alleging that repeated requests to the ambulance staff went unheeded.
