The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday questioned the arrest of Nihang Sikh Navdeep Singh in Himachal Pradesh, alleging that the Congress government in the hill state had acted against him for exercising his democratic right to dissent.
Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal criticised Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of adopting “double standards” on the issue of freedom of expression.
In a post on X, Baliawal referred to Singh’s arrest following the alleged recording of a video near the Indira Gandhi statue at Shimla’s Ridge. He claimed that despite Rahul Gandhi’s repeated advocacy for the right to protest and freedom of speech, the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh had allegedly registered an FIR against Singh and sent him to 10 days of judicial custody.
Questioning the Congress leader’s stand, Baliawal asked whether the principles of free expression and the right to protest applied equally to everyone or only when it suited the party politically. He also claimed that people in Punjab and across the country were closely watching the developments.
Meanwhile, Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon welcomed the passage of the stringent anti-paper leak legislation by Parliament and supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warning against those involved in examination malpractices.
Dhillon said the new law would help safeguard the future of students and strengthen transparency in the examination system. He asserted that the Centre was committed to protecting the interests of young aspirants and ensuring strict action against those responsible for paper leaks.
Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, Dhillon alleged that repeated examination irregularities in the state had adversely affected students, accusing the ruling party of failing to protect the interests of the youth.
