India’s Tejaswin Shankar scripted history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by becoming the country’s first athlete to win a medal in the men’s decathlon at a major international multi-sport event, securing a bronze in Glasgow with an impressive all-round performance.
The 27-year-old finished with 7,976 points in one of athletics’ most demanding disciplines, adding another milestone to his illustrious career. The bronze also made Tejaswin the first Indian athlete to win Commonwealth Games medals in two different disciplines, having earlier claimed bronze in the men’s high jump at the Birmingham 2022 Games.
Grenada’s Victor Lindon won the gold medal with a season-best tally of 8,096 points, while Canada’s Damian Warner secured silver with 8,036 points.
Tejaswin began the competition steadily, clocking 10.96 seconds in the 100 metres before producing a 7.82-metre leap in the long jump, which lifted him into medal contention. Strong performances in the shot put, high jump and 400 metres left him second overall after the opening day with 4,339 points.
The second day presented fresh challenges. Despite slipping to fourth after the discus throw and pole vault, Tejaswin bounced back with an impressive javelin throw to reclaim third place. He then held his position in the concluding 1,500 metres to seal a historic podium finish.
The reigning Asian champion in both the decathlon and heptathlon, Tejaswin is also India’s national record holder in the event and the first Indian decathlete to cross the 8,000-point mark. A graduate of Kansas State University, he previously established himself as one of India’s leading high jumpers before successfully transitioning to combined events.
His latest achievement marks another landmark moment for Indian athletics and underlines the country’s growing presence in multi-event competitions on the international stage.
