India has marked a significant milestone in agricultural exports with the first-ever sea shipment of Bihar’s famed Makhana (fox nuts) to Canada, a development expected to strengthen the global presence of the state’s premium produce and boost farmers’ incomes.
The seven-metric-tonne consignment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), reflecting the growing international demand for Bihar’s Makhana and India’s value-added agricultural products.
Welcoming the achievement, Makhana exporter Manish Kumar described it as a proud moment for Bihar. He said roasted Makhana from Purnia had earlier been exported internationally, an achievement that had also been acknowledged by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. He noted that the latest export of plain Makhana from Darbhanga represented another important step in expanding Bihar’s export footprint.
Kumar said the government’s support was creating new opportunities for young entrepreneurs in the state. He recalled that Makhana had previously been exported from Purnia to Dubai via the sea route and expressed hope that exports of value-added products such as roasted and flavoured Makhana would continue to grow with sustained policy support.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also hailed the development, stating that seven metric tonnes of flavoured Makhana had been exported from Darbhanga to Canada through the sea route for the first time with APEDA’s assistance.
The minister said farmers associated with the initiative were receiving prices more than 50 per cent higher than earlier, while Bihar’s premium Makhana was steadily earning recognition among consumers across global markets.
The successful shipment is expected to open new export opportunities, encourage greater investment in processing and value addition, and strengthen India’s position in the international healthy snack and ready-to-eat food segment. With rising global demand for nutritious food products, Bihar’s Makhana is increasingly emerging as a promising export commodity.
