India continued its impressive campaign at the U17 Wrestling World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, with the women’s team securing two silver medals and two bronze medals on Friday, further strengthening the country’s medal tally at the global event.
Sandhya Vishnoi claimed a silver medal in the 46kg category after an outstanding run to the final. She faced Japan’s Kokona Makino in the gold medal bout but went down 2-13 on points, finishing as runner-up after a commendable campaign.
India’s second silver of the day came in the 53kg division through Akshara, who added another international medal to her growing list of achievements after winning bronze at the 2026 U17 Asian Wrestling Championships. In the final, she was beaten 0-11 by USA’s Marlee J. Solomon to settle for the silver medal.
In the bronze medal contests, Avanshika delivered a composed display in the 61kg category, defeating Kazakhstan’s Aruzhan Bakytnur 5-1 on points to secure a place on the podium.
Taniya also returned with a bronze medal after a dominant performance in the 69kg category. She outclassed Poland’s Maja Wejchan 12-2, showcasing aggressive attacking wrestling to seal an emphatic victory.
The latest success follows another productive day for the Indian women’s contingent, which had earlier earned one silver and two bronze medals. Nikita Sehrawat secured silver in the 57kg category after reaching the final before losing 0-6 to reigning U17 World silver medallist Epenesa Elison of the United States.
The championship will now move to the men’s freestyle competition, with Indian wrestlers set to compete in the 48kg, 55kg, 65kg, 80kg and 110kg weight categories.
