Several Hindu seers, priests and religious organisations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), on Friday criticised an Opposition protest in Parliament in which saffron attire was used during a demonstration over alleged misappropriation of donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
The protest took place at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, where Independent MP from Bihar’s Purnia constituency Rajesh Ranjan Yadav, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, appeared dressed in saffron robes and sat beside padlocked containers resembling donation boxes.
During the protest, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and several Opposition MPs were seen placing currency notes into the containers, after which Pappu Yadav acted out a mock theft by running away with the boxes as other MPs gave chase. The demonstration was intended to highlight allegations of misappropriation of Ram Temple donation funds.
Reacting to the protest, VHP International Joint General Secretary Surendra Jain urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take strict action against the MPs involved. In a video statement, he alleged that wearing the attire of Hindu priests during the protest had hurt religious sentiments and insulted the seer community.
Jain also warned that legal action could be pursued against those involved. Drawing a parallel with the Ramayana, he alleged that the protest amounted to an attempt to misuse symbols of the Hindu faith.
Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti National General Secretary Jitendranand Saraswati also criticised the use of saffron robes during the demonstration, describing it as an insult to Sanatan Dharma. He demanded an unconditional apology from those involved and said issues relating to the alleged Ram Temple donation irregularities were already being examined through a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the Supreme Court.
Several other religious leaders, including Mahamandaleshwar Shashikant Das, Mahamandaleshwar Narayan Giri Ji Maharaj, and office-bearers associated with religious organisations in Ayodhya, also condemned the protest.
