A 36-year-old man from Odisha has given a new lease of life to four patients through organ donation after being declared brain dead at Surat New Civil Hospital, where his heart was transported by train for transplantation in what hospital authorities described as a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.
The donor, Mithun Swain, a native of Kalakhadi village in Odisha’s Ganjam district who had been working in a weaving unit at Pipodara near Surat, donated his heart, liver and both kidneys after his family consented to organ donation. The donation marked the 96th successful organ retrieval at Surat New Civil Hospital.
According to hospital officials, Swain suffered a medical emergency on July 28 shortly after returning to his room following a meal. He developed facial distortion and paralysis on the left side of his body before being shifted to Surat New Civil Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
A medical board declared him brain dead at 4.01 p.m. on July 30. Following counselling by representatives of the Organ Donation Charitable Trust, his wife, brother and other family members agreed to donate his organs in the hope of saving lives and promoting awareness about organ donation in their native village.
Before the retrieval procedure, hospital staff, doctors and family members held a prayer meeting to pay their respects.
The liver and both kidneys were allocated to the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad. The heart was transported aboard the Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express from Surat to Ahmedabad, completing the journey in about three hours and 45 minutes.
After the train reached Ahmedabad, the organ was rushed to U.N. Mehta Hospital through a green corridor coordinated by the Railway Protection Force and Gujarat Police to ensure timely transplantation.
Hospital authorities credited the successful operation to the coordinated efforts of Surat New Civil Hospital, Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force, Gujarat Police, transplant teams, the Organ Donation Charitable Trust and volunteers.
