The Congress on Sunday criticised the Centre’s decision to constitute a high-powered task force on examination reforms under Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, alleging that the initiative is aimed at repairing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “compromised image” rather than addressing systemic failures in the examination process.
Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh questioned the government’s decision, pointing out that a high-level committee headed by former ISRO Chairman Dr K. Radhakrishnan had already been constituted in June 2024 following multiple examination irregularities, including the NEET-UG controversy.
In a post on X, Ramesh said the government had yet to implement the 101 recommendations made by the Radhakrishnan Committee. He also alleged that the National Testing Agency (NTA) functioned for much of the intervening period without a full-time Director General, despite repeated concerns over examination management.
Referring to the latest decision, Ramesh said that after another round of alleged irregularities in NEET-UG and other examinations in 2026, the Centre had announced a new task force instead of fully implementing the earlier reform recommendations. He described the move as a “high-powered attempt to fix the Prime Minister’s irretrievably compromised image.”
The criticism came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the formation of the task force, stating that its recommendations would guide measures to strengthen the credibility, transparency and integrity of future public examinations.
The announcement followed the conclusion of a prolonged students’ protest over alleged examination paper leaks, which ended after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned.
According to an official statement, the task force will be chaired by Nandan Nilekani and include former ISRO Chairman S. Somnath, former Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, former Education Secretary Anita Karwal and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena.
