The last rites of veteran actress and Padma Shri awardee Sowcar Janaki, who died in Chennai on Friday at the age of 94 following age-related ailments, will be performed at the Besant Nagar Crematorium on Saturday afternoon.
Aravind, the actress’s grandson-in-law, said family members had gathered at her Chennai residence to pay their last respects. He added that members of the public would be allowed to pay homage to the veteran actress from Saturday morning, with the final rites scheduled for the late afternoon.
Sowcar Janaki, whose original name was Sankaramanchi Janaki, was born on December 12, 1931. Her acting career spanned nearly seven decades, during which she appeared in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema.
Known for her performances in several cult classics, she earned recognition as one of South Indian cinema’s most respected actresses. She was conferred the Padma Shri for her contribution to Indian cinema.
She is survived by three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Meanwhile, Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi mourned her death and described her contribution to Indian cinema as unforgettable.
In a tribute posted on X, Chiranjeevi said the news of the veteran actress’s demise had left him deeply saddened. He recalled that her illustrious cinematic journey began with Shavukaru and extended across Telugu, Tamil and other language films for nearly seven decades.
Chiranjeevi said Janaki’s natural acting brought authenticity to a wide range of characters and earned her a lasting place in the hearts of audiences.
Describing her as a great actress, he said her contribution to Indian cinema would remain unforgettable. He also conveyed his condolences to her family and fans and prayed for eternal peace for her soul.
