Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday came out in support of actor Trisha Krishnan after Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin faced legal action over his alleged double-meaning remarks involving the actress.
Reacting to the controversy, Kangana said that obscene jokes and vulgar remarks made publicly were unacceptable in a civilised society. In a post on her Instagram Stories, she wrote, “Public display of filthy abuses, double meaning obscene and vulgar jokes is not acceptable to any civilised society.”
Commenting on Udhayanidhi Stalin’s arrest in connection with the case, Kangana said the action could set a positive precedent.
“Mr Stalin was sent to jail for the offence, he might be out on bail by now but it’s a good precedent,” she wrote.
The controversy began after Udhayanidhi Stalin allegedly made a double entendre involving Trisha during a DMK protest in Thanjavur over the Cauvery water dispute. The remarks reportedly came after party workers raised slogans mentioning the actress. Udhayanidhi later clarified that his reference was to the Cauvery river and not Trisha.
Following a complaint by workers of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a case was registered against Udhayanidhi. Police later took him into custody from his Chennai residence on Tuesday. He was subsequently released on bail after questioning.
Earlier, actress and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar had also criticised Udhayanidhi’s remarks, describing them as “crass, cheap and deeply derogatory.”
In a social media post, Khushbu said women should be respected and not used as political targets. She added that resorting to personal attacks and vulgar remarks reflected a lack of ability to counter political opponents on issues of performance, vision and leadership.
Khushbu also demanded an unconditional public apology from Udhayanidhi Stalin.
