India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur says the pressure surrounding an India-Pakistan cricket match is unlike anything else as the Indian team prepares for its Asia Cup campaign.
India and Pakistan are in Group A of the continental tournament and are scheduled to meet in their final league-stage match on September 5. India have dominated the head-to-head record in T20Is, winning 14 of their 17 meetings with Pakistan, including the last four in succession.
Despite that record, Kaur said the rivalry creates a unique atmosphere, with the match attracting attention well beyond regular cricket followers.
“No doubt it’s a high-pressure game and as a player you need to deal with multiple things. We keep playing international cricket, but the amount of pressure in an India vs Pakistan match, that kind of pressure you don’t feel anywhere else,” Kaur told Sony Sports Network.
She said players try to handle the occasion by concentrating on their routines and the team’s game plan rather than becoming preoccupied with the result.
“The idea always is not to think too far into the future but to be in the present and try to give your best,” Kaur said, adding that following the process would eventually bring results.
India are the most successful team in Asia Cup history, with seven titles — four in the ODI format and three in T20Is. They missed out on the previous edition, losing the final to Sri Lanka.
Kaur said India would enter the tournament with the expectation of winning, pointing to their strong run over the past four to five years, including the 2025 ODI World Cup triumph and their Test victory over England at Lord’s.
She said the team’s winning mindset and desire to succeed in tournaments would provide additional motivation as India seek another continental title.
