Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday expressed concern over the death by suicide of an IIT Delhi student and called for a fair and time-bound investigation, while raising concerns over the reported number of student suicides across IITs in recent years.
In a post on X, Kejriwal expressed grief over the death of Rishikesh, an IIT Delhi student, and said all concerns raised by students in connection with the matter should be addressed.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic demise of Rishikesh at IIT Delhi. There must be a fair and time-bound investigation into the matter, and all concerns of the students must be addressed. More than 65 IIT students have died by suicide over the past five years, and this situation is deeply concerning,” he said.
Kejriwal said the academic reputation of the Indian Institutes of Technology should not be assessed only through rankings, grades and placements.
“We take pride in the academic excellence of our IIT institutions, and rightly so. But the measure of our excellence cannot stop at ranks, grades and placements,” he said.
The AAP leader stressed the need for educational institutions to create environments where students can seek help and have their concerns heard.
“We must ensure that every student receives the support they need, has someone who will listen to them, and has a safe environment in which they can seek help during difficult times,” he said.
Calling for institutional introspection, Kejriwal said the broader system needed to be addressed to ensure that students were not left without adequate support.
“We need to introspect and fix this entire system. We cannot let our students down like this,” he said.
His remarks came amid concerns over student mental health and support mechanisms in higher educational institutions. Kejriwal said the focus should extend beyond academic performance to ensuring that students receive appropriate support during difficult periods.
